Lesson Sequence
-Watch a video about How Halloween started.
-Discuss what was said on the origins of Halloween in the
video.
-Move into Fears (this is why they left treats by the door
and dressed up when they went outside)
What are the things we are afraid
of? Why are we afraid of these things? What are our fears based
on?
on?
-Introduce collage art
What is
collage art? Why do artists make this kind of art?
-Discuss
the artists and their works.
-Introduce collage art piece
Making a collage using magazines; the original images the students choose cannot be scary. However what they make out of those pieces should be something thay are afraid of and the form should be something they made up themselves. The collage also needs to have a background. Where does what you are afraid of live?

Assessment
After
we finish the collages ask the students how they think they did on the
assignment. Did they follow directions, meet the parameters of the assignment,
have fun, and was it something they made up themselves out of their imagination.
Have the students show a thumbs up, down, or somewhere in between to answer
each question.
I feel like this lesson went decently well. I had fun and I think the students did as well. However, I was not extremely clear when I tied the art project to the concept, fear- which relates back to Halloween. In consequence the students seemed a little lost, not knowing what they were supposed to create. Also Mr. Jenkins believes that if I am more thorough in my instructions of how to use materials and better in passing out said materials, my lesson will flow much more smoothly. However even after all of these setbacks the students still made incredible images, of things they are afraid of, using magazine pieces. And their creativity astounds me. Perhaps Dr. Graham, a professor at BYU, is right when he says a little confusion in the classroom pushes students to learn on their own and consequently remember what they learn.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see what the students made! Do you have any photos you could post?
